So far in my wanderings around the old town of Krakow, I wasn’t terribly impressed by the old town. There were a few old buildings but nothing really stood out for me. I could probably be biased because I didn’t know where I was going and I ended up going to the more modern side of town. I relented and finally took out the phone and got my bearings right. The main goal was the Main Square of Krakow. I didn’t really know much about Krakow, in fact, all I knew about Poland was that Warsaw was the capital. Then came Pope John Paul II who was the bishop of Krakow, which added another item to my very short list of Poland facts.
Apparently, Krakow was a very important city and arguably is still just as important as it was back then. The city was the seat of the royal court until the king decided to move it to Warsaw. Having been in Krakow for so long it is not surprising that large infrastructure was put in place. Krakow has a very large square named Rynek Główny which is considered to be the largest medieval square in Europe. Indeed, it is much larger than any of the squares that I have been to in the past. The square is lined with numerous establishments and it is surely a very lively place at night. I will have a lot of time to explore that in the next few days.
