Around Wawel Cathedral

Square Outside Wawel Cathedral

The Wawel Cathedral is a rather strange structure. It appears like it is an odd combination of architectural styles, Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance. It appears off the side of Wawel Castle like an afterthought. The Władysław the Short, the first king to be crowned at Wawel, wanted a cathedral built to replace the second cathedral that stood on this site. What resulted was this wonderful structure which is part of Poland’s most important buildings. That day, I didn’t go in Wawel castle since it was already mid afternoon and I would still have a few days left in Krakow, so I thought to save it for later.

The castle has a nice open area across the cathedral, almost like a square. There was also a green area which appears to have the remains of the foundation of some older building from before. I never new what that was all about but I thought they should have put a sign to say what it was. For people who are not on the walking tour, there might not be enough information to go by especially when just walking around. It is interesting to see that there is a square within the castle complex. I would have imagined the town to have a square which is adjacent to the castle.
