Warsaw is the capital city of Poland. Its fortunes rose when King Sigismund III move the royal court from Krakow to Warsaw. The result is that a large number of government buildings sprung up in the city. Poland is no longer a monarchy and has a presidential form of government. There is a building here which is the Presidential Palace. The building here used to be the home of the rich before it became a government building. It is traditionally the seat of the president of the country. It didn’t seem to be open for visits when I was there. It is also possible that it was already too late in the day for visits.
What is probably more curious about this place was the presence of crosses near the entrance to the palace grounds. It seems to be a memorial of sorts to the victims of an air crash which included the former president. There was an outpouring of grief to the president and crosses were setup here, including one much larger than the ones in the photos. After a lot of political discussions about the separation of church and state as well as conspiracy theorists, the cross was quietly moved to the nearby Saint Anne’s Church but the smaller crosses remained. Because of this, the succeeding president is said to have avoided using this as a residence to avoid trouble with the supporters of the former president.
