I didn’t plan on coming to Slieve League but my friends decided that this was a nice place to visit this time of the year. It was a much better time since the weather is clearer. There were promises of blue skies here but they came in patches. We thought to do some bit of hiking here since we were already there. I didn’t have proper hiking shoes so it was also difficult for me. Fortunately, the steps going up were dry which meant they weren’t slippery. However, there was something here which it didn’t like – midges.
There was still a bit of summer left and summer is the time when insects come out. One of the most irritating insects for me are what they call midges here. They are smaller than mosquitoes but far more irritating. The tiny insects fly in swarms usually in a very localized area. If you happen to have any bit of exposed skin, they will bite. The bite are painless but they will itch, real bad. I had a lot of bites in the neck area, probably make sense to call them tiny vampires. They itches for days after the bite. The midges here were found along the viewing deck facing the cliffs. I think I lingered on a bit too long in that area and got bitten really bad. There weren’t midges on the ascent, fortunately.
