It seems that when the monks decided to move away from civilization and live here, it was for keeps. I think it was difficult at the start since there weren’t any structures here available to stay in. The first settlers must have had it very rough. Although there were a lot of stone here to build the huts. They still needed to cut the stones into the right size to be of use. Perhaps they had some sort of temporary dwelling while the huts were being built. It is also very unlikely that they lived in total isolation. In fact, they even had a school here, which means there were little kids here. I would not speculate where those kids come from but it seemed to be a lively place at least.
The people who stayed here in Skellig Michael, well, a lot of them decided to live the rest of their lives here. There was a graveyard behind the monastery. There were tombstones which line the lot, which wasn’t very big. What was quite obvious was how quite a number of people decided to be buried here. It might have been too difficult to get the body shipped back to the mainland, and why not, since they decided to live here they might as well be buried here. In a separate grave, it seems that some kids also died or at least got buried on this island.
