Christ’s Saddle

Christ’s Saddle at Skellig Michael

We were on the trail to the top of Skellig Michael. This was probably roughly the same trail used by the monks to find a place to live. Seeing as to how inhospitable this landscape here is, there was no choice but to go up. At the top of the climb is a feature called Christ’s Saddle. It is a saddle shapped piece of land which is relatively flat giving us a bit of rest from the climb. Upon reaching this area, we were met by even more powerful gusts of wind which was being blocked by the island as we were making our way to the top.

I thought it was a great location to set up a settlement but the winds here were just too powerful. The saddle was flat-ish enough that one could probably build houses here but I think the winds just ruled that idea out. The winds were so powerful that it felt like one can get blown away from the island from here. I could imagine that the saddle could have been used as a farm since that is the only flat piece of land around here. Perhaps this is where livestock were kept since they won’t easily get blown away by the wind.
