I was a bit surprised to see the how small the entrance of Blarney Castle actually was. Given the popularity of the castle, I thought it would have a large gate but this wasn’t the case. The entrance was just wide enough for a person to go through. It seem like it is somewhere you could just knock and be let in. This is in constrast with the large gates I saw at Bunratty Castle or Cahir Castle in county Tipperary. Perhaps it wasn’t the hugely imporant castle that I thought it was. There were a lot of people going in but it seemed that that castle was large enough to handle the traffic.
The first hall upon entry wasnt’ very impressive. It was dark and I guess, very castle like. The stone of the castle walls has already been exposed but you can see traced of what was once there. I imagine that it would have been a much more welcoming place than now. There was a single window illuminating the place and an electric lamp on the other side. It actually felt more like a dungeon than a castle. Perhaps it would be much better upstairs.
