I dropped by the town of Cahir to visit Cahir Castle. It seems that it is quite the important castle and I wanted to see why. It really is an imposing structure sitting on the banks of the River Suir. The river served as a natural defense aside from its heavily fortified walls. It was built in the 1100s and it is considered one of the largest castles in Ireland. The name actually comes from the Irish word cathair for fort, I believe it is pronouced cahir as the modern spelling of the place is. It was strange since I thought cashel also meant fort. Maybe I need to learn Irish for that.
It is quite easy to explore Cahir Castle. It wasn’t as large as I thought considering it is one of the largest castles in the country. There was the great hall which seems to be quite common in castles. One could imagine how banquets would be done here back then. It is really up to your imagination. That was a display of huge antlers here which basically completed the whole Game of Thrones image, except that this was the real thing. Considering how busy the town of Cahir was, I was surprised to see how few people there were actually inside the castle.
