I was under the impression that the Rock of Cashel was composed of a castle. However, I was surprised to know that the main structure here is actually a cathedral. Although the old cathedral is now in ruins, there is still a lot to see here. Students of architecture would have a feast picking out features of the cathedral. I know nothing of these things, but I still think they are interesting. As far as cathedrals are concerned, the Saint Patrick’s Cathedral here at the Rock of Cashel is pretty standard. The cathedral is in a standard cruciform shape with all the standard features.
Where the choir was supposed to be turned out to be a surprise. There were tomb stones here, and I don’t recall seeing churches have tomb in this part of the cathedral. I suspect that they were put here much later, maybe after the church was no longer in use. It would have been strange to have it right here since the choir would be here and the altar would be nearby too. Then again, people would like to be buried as close to God as possible so this might have been a common practice back then. Much of the wall didn’t have any detail but there was one particular spot which still had frescoes indicating the magnificence of this place back then. The remaining part is in an enclosed area and it was quite difficult to see it but it really is there. It is a pity that the cathedral fell into ruin. I couldn’t find out the reason for its abandonment perhaps it had something to do with the religious suppression by the English.
