No self respecting abbey wouldn’t have a church of its own. The Glenstal Abbey is no different. There is a church here which sits on top of a small elevation in the complex. From the outside it looked quite large. I was quite excited to see how it looks from the inside seeing how impressive the entrance was, I was hoping for a surprise here. In a sense, I got the surprise I wanted. The church wasn’t actually all that impressive. In fact, it look kind of ordinary, perhaps too modern.
The outside of the church gave me the impression that it was a Gothic church with soaring columns and very fancy art. However, I didn’t get any of that here. The ceiling was high enough but it didn’t have very high columns. The windows were high up but the ceiling had a unique design which I can’t say I have seen in churches anywhere. I was almost as if the school let the students help design the ceiling. There were rows of pews here as well as the altar right in front. It wasn’t really that special but it wasn’t that ugly either, I guess I got spoiled seeing all the fancy church they have here. I think it wasn’t that surprising anyway, seeing how relatively recent Glenstal Abbey actually was.
