I was making my way out of county Limerick. The day seemed to be much better than the previous miserable day so I thought to leave earlier to make the most of it. I would spend a most of the day driving around so it best to get going. I thought of heading straight for what maybe county Tipperary’s biggest tourist attraction but I was told to drop by another place before coming here. That place is Glenstal Abbey. I must admit that this place didn’t even show up as a place of interest during my research. I merely punched in the search for this place and let the GPS take care of the rest. I didn’t really mind dropping by here since it was on the way.
Glenstal Abbey as one may imagine was in a rather isolated part of the country. There weren’t a lot of houses around the area as abbeys tend to be. In the first place, they seem to be on a vary large estate. Visitors have to drive all the way in the estate to get to the main site passing through what appears to be parkland. What greeted me at the end of the road was a large fortress like structure, which is totally unlike any abbey I have seen. The gates of Glenstal Abbey are forbidding with very large towers on both sides of the gate, including the corners of the structure. Anyone intending to invade this place would have a tough time taking it over.
