Saint Mary’s Cathedral in Limerick

When I got to Saint Mary’s Cathedral, the rain was already quite bad. It was probably due to my stubbornness to pursue my tour instead of just resting in the apartment. I only have an afternoon to spend here in Limerick as I will leaving the next day. I refused to leave Limerick without seeing the city. My visit to King’s Island was not very nice. Saint Mary’s Cathedral is probably one of the oldest structures in the city. The church was established in 1168 on top of a former Viking site. It is said that the king of Munster himself founded the church.

Saint Mary’s Cathedral is actually part of the Church of Ireland. This happened when the English captured Limerick in the 1600s. There was a brief period when it reverted back to its Roman Catholic origins but as history went, it wasn’t for long. The cathedral is said to have incorporated parts of the original Viking structure into the present one. It is currently only of the oldest structures in Ireland which is still being used for its intended purpose. I would have loved to visit this place but I couldn’t find an open door. The path to the graveyard didn’t give any leads which was disappointing. I always thought that church should always be open but this doesn’t seem to be the case here.
