Walking Towards the Esplanade

Walking Towards the Esplanade

It was finally my last stop of the night. I have been going around the Marina Bay area in a much quicker pace than I normally do. I waited for the light and music show at the Gardens by the Bay and slowly made my way to the Merlion Park. While it is actually just next to each other, one needs to go a rather roundabout way of exploring the place. I made my way to the Marina Bay Sands and crossed the Helix Bridge to reach the Marina Bay floating platform and then to the Esplanade. From here I walked across the new Jubilee Bridge to the Merlion Park. This gave me a very nice tour of what is one of my favorite areas in the Singapore.

I needed to hurry on since I still haven’t had dinner. There is this place I wanted to eat at in Marina Square and I needed to go there before the mall closes. Before that, I needed to take photos of another Singapore landmark – the Esplanade. The Esplanade is probably one of the first of the new landmarks here to be built. The shape of the two domes were ridiculed because of their similarity to a durian fruit – local favorite. This may have been intentional though. The Esplanade roof has “scales” which let the sunlight in when the sun is low but not when it is high above. At night it glitters like a jewel. It is said to be Singapore’s answer to the Sydney opera house but I think it is an unfair comparison. The Esplanade has since hosted several high profile performances since its opening.
