I must admit that exploring Beemster is a challenge for me. This place is a UNESCO world heritage site just outside Amsterdam. It is the first reclaimed polder which is a piece of land reclaimed from the sea by pumping out the water. There is still a lot of water around here, you can see them in the form of canals which are mainly used for irrigation. There are a few villages here in Beemster. You can visit them by car or by bicycle. It would surprise you to know that the municipality of Beemster is laid out extremely well. It is divided into a huge grid pattern with the major roads forming squares two kilometers on each side.
It is a huge area and you would need a car of bicycle to explore this place properly. The canals are also very well planned here and are part and parcel of the municipality. You will need a map to find places here. Of particular interest here are some traditional houses which I can only describe as slightly flatter pyramid in shape. I only saw this design here in the Netherlands but there seems to be an abundance of these structures here. Most of them are private so you can only look at them from the outside. We didn’t bother looking at all of those houses anymore since it was further than we anticipated.
