I can’t really get over Afsluitdijk. It is a marvel of Dutch engineering where they dammed off a sea. I can’t really imagine how it could have been done then or now, since the dijk is quite long. I guess am not really an engineer to appreciate how easy or difficult such a task is. Construction was completed ahead of time and they built a highway above it. After all, it is a quick way to get to Amsterdam instead of passing through the busy south. There is a rest stop here in the middle of highway and one can get off the car to admire this impressive structure.
I noticed that there was a man who was looking over the water all by himself. I didn’t think much of it and I even thought there was something wrong with him until I saw him pour something from a jar, or probably more accurately, it was an urn. He was scattering the remains of a loved one and was crying afterwards. It was a sad sight to see but I guess, I can’t be happy all the time here. It was a sobering sight to say the least. I guess that goes to show that you can really do lots of things here. For me, it was more of admiring the dammed water as it feels like an oasis in mass of concrete that is the dike.
