It was a bit strange to be stopping in the middle of a highway to take photos. However, the Aflsuitdijk isn’t any normal highway. This is a highway on top of a dike which connects east and west Netherlands. This massive engineering marvel also serves as a dam creating an artificial lake called the IJsselmeer. There was a rest area in the middle of the highway which lets visitors better appreciate the dike. Actually, from the point of view of someone on the highway itself. There is very little to see. There is a highway and there is water on both sides of the road.
There is a monument dedicated to the people who worked on the project. On the other side of the road there seems to be a thin building. I guess that is was a viewing deck to let people see the whole. But I don’t think it would have made much difference since the place was so vast, climbing up a few flights of stairs wouldn’t have made much of a difference here. It didn’t help that the stairway was closed as well. It was already late afternoon which probably explains why it was closed. I was just thankful that the weather was holding up. I hope that the bad weather in Harlingen would not come and chase us. There was some sun showing and I was hoping for some nice lighting.
