Hindeloopen is a another pretty little city in the Netherlands. It sits on the shores of the IJsselmeer and it is a pleasure to walk around here. I love how the city seems to be stuck in time and at the same time it doesn’t feel like it is a museum city. I guess, it is not touristy enough to get that treatment. I don’t think there were a lot of tourists here but I think this is one of those off the beaten track kind of side trips. I wasn’t sure what to see here but we were about to find out. We walked along the periphery of the city and we can see that the city is quite flat with the exception of a few buildings. One of these buildings is the Dutch Reformed Church.
This is the first time I have heard of the Dutch Reformed Church, apparently, it is a Protestant denomination which seems to be an offshoot of the Reformation movement. It was the largest Christian denomination in the Netherlands until the 1930s when it was overtaken by the Roman Catholic Church. There is a church here in Hindeloopen that was by the Dutch Reformed Church. It has a tall central tower and a sizable building. Although it may not be obvious from the photos, but the tower actually leans. This is probably because of the soft soil they have here. I don’t know what measure they did to arrest the tilt but I don’t think it is in danger of collapsing soon.
