We traveled further up north to the old city of Hindeloopen which is still in Friesland. We were just following this trail on our way back to Amsterdam. Fortunately, we had a rental car with us so it was easy enough for us to travel like this. Now, I was happy that we rented a car and didn’t need to spend all of our time in Amsterdam, not that it was bad there. Hindeloopen is a city on the shores of the IJsselmeer, a large artificial freshwater lake. Having seen how much the water meant to the city of Sloten, it is thus not surprising at all to see how much the city of Hindeloopen embraces the sea.
Probably the first place I noticed in the town was the presence of a large marina. This is one of Northern Europe’s largest marinas. Frankly, I was surprised are able to afford such things here in Europe considering how high taxes are here. The marina naturally connects to the IJsselmeer and I think it makes for great fun. I guess that being an artificial lake, waves won’t be that big a problem here since it is not directly connected to the open sea. I didn’t sea and sailboats out in the open though, perhaps this isn’t the sea for that.
