Perhaps more so that the rest of the country, the small city of Sloten has close affinity with water. There is a large canal which passed through the city and the city has embraced it with gusto. If you look at the map, you can see the the city of Sloten is purposely built around the canal. One might think that this is a recent thing but the city of Sloten has been a city since 1426. That’s old than a lot of countries including the United States. Interestingly, the city didn’t really grow that large and I think it is perfect that way.
Unsurprisingly, the city has sailing as a major activity. There is a rather large marina here called the Lemsterpoort Marina and it is home to a large number of sailboats. I don’t know if the boats are owned by the locals but it is difficult to imagine this place to be something like a Venice where you have to own a boat. Land transport is convenient enough here so I assume that the boats are owned by the wealthy. As we walk around, there are small boats which probably would look out of place in a marina, these seem to be the more humble type of boat and are probably owned by the locals. I didn’t see any boats for rent. I thought it would have been a interesting activity here. The canals actually connect to larger bodies of water which makes me think that it is a popular activity here.
