Bell of the Belfry of Ghent

The Bells of the Belfry of Ghent

The Bells of the Belfry of Ghent

I was very happy to see the view from the top of the Belfry of Ghent. I guess, I have been wanting to climb up to the tower of a medieval city just to see the view all this time. I remember seeing photos of Florence and how amazing the view is from the top and I was hoping to be able to see something like that. This was probably the closest thing to that but the weather wasn’t that great. I would have wanted a sunny day but I think it wasn’t meant to be. The city was quite flat so there was little to block the view apart from a few churches which seem to be perfectly positioned for photos. Anyway, it seems that the view isn’t all there is to it at the top. There is still more to see.

Visitors can continue to go up the stairs but soon discover that they won’t be able to enter the floor. There is however a little peephole you can use to have a look at what is there. I guess it doesn’t come as a surprise to know that the bell of the belfry is at the top of the tower. Actually, there are several bells visible here, I can’t really see how many there are in total but this is what makes the beautiful sound of the belfry. Remember that a few floors below, there was a music drum which will determine which bell will toll in conjunction with the other bells. I would have wanted to see it in action but the hole wasn’t very big and can only accommodate one peeper at a time. I would like to believe that they keep this floor off limits to visitor for safety reasons. Imagine the noise here when the bell rings.
