I was surprised to see large paintings on display at the Cathedral of Our Lady in Antwerp. While having priceless art housed in a church is probably nothing new but in this case, these were paintings and they are placed on the pillars meaning that it really is part of the design of the church and it is not just an exhibition of the paintings. The paintings may not be as well known as the works of Michaelangelo or da Vinci but the paintings are still very impressive nonetheless. It seems that it wasn’t just paintings here but also sculptures.
While it wasn’t as plentiful as the paintings, the sculptures still manage to catch attention. There was a model of the Cathedral of Our Lady which gives you an idea of the overall structure of the cathedral since we can only see it from the inside. You can see how the cathedral could have been a two tower cathedral. I think that would have been very impressive. The belfry of the Cathedral of Our Lady happens to be the tallest in the Benelux region. The other sculpture seems a little more whimsical. There was a figure of a man balancing a large crucifix on his hand. I wasn’t sure that the sculpture means to tell but I thought it was one of the stranger things I saw in that cathedral.
