The Cathedral of Our Lady in Antwerp is a surprisingly interesting church. I thought it was just your run of the mill Gothic church, of which I have already seen more than a few. In fact as far as design is concerned, the interiors of the cathedral are okay at best. Large part of the cathedral are quite dim probably because there are art works on permanent display here. I think it is a departure from art I have seen in Gothic church where art tends to be in the form of sculptures. Paintings tend to be displayed in a different part of the church.

The altar of the cathedral is naturally the centerpiece of entire church. Interestingly, it isn’t as grand as the others I have seen. There is a smaller altar where the tabernacle is normally put. I think the most interesting piece here is the cross which hangs from the ceiling. The cross is quite ornate and I don’t think I have seen a design like the before. To the right of the altar are pipes for the organ used by the choir. I would have wanted to see the choir in action here but there was no service at the time.
