Even before I thought of going to Belgium, a friend of mine has already been visiting Belgium regularly. I was curious as to why he would be visiting this country so often. I found out that he would be visiting the same town over and over again. The name of the town is Ghent and I have never heard of the place. That is probably a good thing since it means it is not very touristy. My friend is an avid beer drinker and he told me he would come to this town to drink beer. I wasn’t sure I understood why he would do this but I thought that Ghent might be worth a visit, helped in part by a glowing review of the town by some website. “Under the radar” was one of the phrases used to describe this town. I thought it should be at least worth a visit.
We finished our trip to Bruges early and my travel buddy suggested to pass by Ghent since it was already along the way. I thought it would be a shame to visit Ghent in just a few hours since I was intending to allocate an entire day for that anyway. We ended up taking a train from Bruges to Ghent which was along the way back to Brussels anyway. The railway station was under construction so it wasn’t a very nice welcome for us. We had a little problem figuring out how to get to the town center since the signs were confusing. We ended up taking a wrong tram until get we helped by a friendly Filipino who was living there. We were soon on our way to explore Ghent.
