The Sint-Salvator Cathedral is one of the most imposing structures in the medieval city of Bruges. It was the tallest structure that I happened to see as we were walking into the town. I remember having the same feeling as we were walking in the Brussels city center but only to find out that it wasn’t actually a church bell tower. I thought it was strange since I have come to associate old tall towers with old churches. In the case of Bruges, it was different. This was an actual belfry which was built by the church. It was actually meant to rival a nearby church belfry as well. The inside of the Sint-Salvator Cathedral was quite frankly underwhelming. I was expecting the church to be very ornate but it seems that there wasn’t too much to be amazed about.
I had a look at the rear of the cathedral and it seems that there were some excavations that were done recently. There were some tombs which were discovered beneath the cathedral floors. The walls of the tomb were drawn with religious characters. The tomb itself was empty though I didn’t know whether the body was taken away. The tombs are covered with glass so you can view the from directly above the tomb. From here you can also admire the massive iron door which is extremely heavy. It is quite ornate as I would have come to expect from an old church. You can also have a look at the altar from here but I keep getting the feeling I’m missing something.
