Bruges is one of the most popular tourist sites in Belgium. It is not really surprisingly to see why. It is a historic city where most if not all of the houses have been preserved. It is a great place to get a feel of medieval Europe. Of course, there are no kings and queens here anymore but a lot of the structures that were built back then have been preserved. The fact that the streets were all paved cobblestones is probably expected. There is probably not a self respecting historic town that won’t have cobblestones in its streets. It is truly a delight to be walking around the city. The place has retained it charm and its soul at least in the area which we passed through.
Somehow, it didn’t feel to be that over-touristed. We were thinking that there should have been a lot more people here but it seemed to be okay. Perhaps the city is large enough that there is enough space to spread everybody around. It is possible also that we are not in the right place yet. We took a map from the train station which was provided by the Bruges tourism office. I think right now, we are still trying to absorb that atmosphere this place provides. Already part of me is sorry we are not going to be staying the night here.
