I had a few days extra from work and some friends of mine thought of organizing a trip to Amsterdam. The plan was to spend a few nights there. I had a bit more days off left to I decided to spend a few more days extra nearby. Unfortunately, getting a visa to the Netherlands on such short notice was unrealistic, the nearest available date they had was more than a month later. Fortunately, Belgium which was right next to the Netherlands was an option and I thought of visiting the Belgium before meeting up with them in Amsterdam. With visa’s in tow, the plan pushed through, in the end though, only one was meeting us in Amsterdam, while one would accompany me in Belgium.
It has been a while since I have been on a trip. Saving up for things like this isn’t the easiest thing to do since I also have my own commitments. I’m just glad this trip is pushing through. To be honest, although I was the one who decided to go to Belgium first, I didn’t think that it would be the wisest thing to do. Still in my mind was the horrible bombing of the Brussels Airport which happened only a month before our trip. While the wise men would say that, it would actually be the safest time to go. Of course, that would always be in my mind. I never imagined that Belgium would be a victim of this kind of attack but then again, people like those terrorists don’t really care about these things.
Upon landing a the Brussels Charleroi Airport, security was obviously tight. People can only come in one entrance and get out another door. There were armed personnel all over the place. And this airport isn’t even the main airport. The main airport is unavailable because of the attacks, so this became the main airport in the meantime. Getting out of the airport and into Brussels was easy enough. There was an airport bus to the city center and it costs 18 euro one way. There didn’t seem to be a lot of options here but what can we do.
