As far as castles go, Dunguaire Castle is not too bad. This castle in the village of Kinvarra in County Galway isn’t that grand. It feels more like a fort than a castle. Then again, castles in this part of the world tend to be like this. It is also possible that the weather here has also shaped how castles are built. Possibly putting a premium on defense and warmth rather than luxury. After all, it is difficult to warm up huge palace compared to a small one. The castle itself seems to be in good condition but I can’t tell how it is from the inside.
The main gates of Dunguaire Castle were unfortunately closed. I wasn’t really sure if they were closed because they were never open in the first place. I have read somewhere that they are open in the summer. It was already just past summer by the time we visited so I can’t say for sure. There doesn’t seem to be a place to sell tickets either. I would have been a shame since I would be nice to go up the castle tower. There isn’t really much to see around this area and the tower isn’t really that tall anyway, but still, to be able to walk up a castle tower isn’t something you can do everyday.
