I was surprised to see a small Gothic cathedral in the grounds of Kylemore Abbey. Back then, Kylemore was still a mansion and it was owned by Michael Henry. Obviously rich, he once went on a vacation to exotic Egypt with his wife Margaret. Tragedy struck when during a tour of the river Nile, Margaret contracted dysentery and she died two weeks later. Margaret’s remains were brought back to Kylmore and buried here. A small Gothic church was built in her memory. This is the church which stands now. It is possible to go in the church. There weren’t a lot of visitors here since it was already late in the day. So we had the entire church to ourselves.
The church is a true Gothic church inside. It has the signature high arches even though the structure itself isn’t very tall. There was a single column of pews here with the altar in front of it. There was a rack for candles for those who wish to offer prayers. I thought the church was nice and charming. It had a mysterious atmosphere and as well as an air of serenity. It is probably an nice place for some reflection. I don’t know if they do weddings here but the fact that it only has a single columns of pews, means there is no aisle for a wedding march. It would have been nice and private.
