I managed to visit an excellent piece of urban renewal in New York City. The High Line is an elevated linear park, which was built following a disused railway line. The result is an elevated park which is quite unique. It seems to be quite a recent addition to New York’s attractions as it started construction in 2006. I was surprised to see how many people there were walking along the old railway line. Speaking of which, where are the rails? It wasn’t very obvious to me initially or perhaps not all of the park has the rails exposed. There was a portion of the High Line which had the original rails exposed. I thought it was a neat idea, since it is not very common that you get to walk along an old railway line.
Since it is a park, there was a lot of greenery here and probably a much better sight for the neighboring buildings compared to a busy railway line which will make a lot of noise as well. There are no intersections here since the entire park is elevated. Those who wish to get off the line have stairs to help them go down some streets. It feels almost strange to walking here as it gives you the illusion that there are no cars here in the city. Of course, if you look over the fence, you can see cars, but at least for the immediate area of the High Line, it feels like an urban oasis.
