I was basically done exploring the Independence Hall. I couldn’t get in since the free tickets had already run out. The Liberty Bell was a nice detour and I think it was good to see a piece of American history. What’s best about it was the it was all free. It seems that I was in the middle of the historic district of the city of Philadelphia. I figured that if I just walked around I would be able to stumble into a few important locations. I was trying to get my bearings using the map I had and saw that there really were a few important places here. In fact, there seems to be one right next to the Independence Hall.
This was a building I never heard of – the American Philosophical Society Hall. The society was founded way back in 1743 and it aimed to promote the use of science and humanities through various activities like research, papers and meetings. In other words, it is some kind of society for very intelligent people. The members of the society look like a who’s who of brilliant minds. Leading the list was Benjamin Franklin then looking at the list is George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Charles Darwin, Louis Pasteur, and Thomas Edison. It really is an impressive society, as to the effectiveness of the society, I can’t really say, but seeing how well know some of the names there are, then I guess there is some kind of benefit to this.
