Now that I reached Park Avenue, I decided to just keep on going and try to reach the other side of Manhattan which is bounded by the East River. With map in tow, I was trying to spot some landmarks in this area before continuing to a different area. Only one landmark stuck out here but I decided to visit it anyway. This is one of the most important buildings in the world – the Headquarters of the United Nations. I wasn’t really expecting to be able to see the headquarters here and in fact it was only now that I remembered that it is actually located here in New York city.
The design of the United Nations Plaza is quite distinctive and it reminds me of the design of the buildings of Brasilia. Indeed the designs of these places came from the mind of Oscar Niemeyer, a Brazilian architect who is probably one of the important figures in modern architecture. I was hoping the plaza would be decorated with the flags of all the member countries there wasn’t even a single one. Maybe it is only on display on weekdays? It is likewise closed to visitors maybe because of a weekend again. It is too bad since it is one of the place which I didn’t mind entering. There is security at the main entrance as well, so you can’t really just walk in.
