I was quite impressed with the Rockefeller Center despite not really knowing too much about it. I am a big fan of architecture and it has always been my dream to come and visit New York City if only to admire the skyscrapers here. I breezed through Rockefeller Center knowing that I would be visiting this place again shortly. As I was exiting, I noticed that there was an impressive looking church across the street. It was a Gothic church which I didn’t really expect here in New York City. Apparently, this is Saint Patrick’s Cathedral and it is the seat of the archbishop for the diocese of New York.
The cathedral was relatively recently constructed in 1850s. There is an older Saint Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City and it is the first cathedral built here, but with the growing population there was a need to build an even bigger one. The decision to dedicate the cathedral to Saint Patrick is most probably due to the large number of Irish migrants in this part of the country. You can probably tell this by the sheer number of Irish pubs in New York City, but I digress. The new cathedral was built to serve the populace and it stands to this day.
