I didn’t plan for any vacation the following week but I was surprised that I was asked by our company to travel to New Jersey for a series of meetings. Much as I dread endless meetings, I was somewhat excited at the opportunity to travel. The United States is a destination which I have never been to, and for me it has always been one of those unreachable dreams to the point that I stopped wishing I could visit. I was surprised that the company was asking me to go but I won’t refuse the opportunity. First of all, my documents weren’t in order. I had just renewed my pass but it would take a week if I waited for the card to be printed in Dublin and sent back to me, then there is the issue of the reentry visa as well. To top it all up, I don’t even have a United States entry visa. All these would take time if done the normal way. So, I had to run to Dublin for two days to get everything sorted. The pass and reentry visa took the longest as there was a computer problem which delayed everyone. I finished that close to three in the afternoon. The next day, I queued at the United States Embassy and it was surprisingly quick and before long, I was on my way to the United States.
We would be having our meetings at the New Jersey office so it made sense to house us there. The corporate hotel of choice in this case was the Westminster Hotel in Livingston. I probably haven’t been to a proper hotel in years and it was refreshing to be able to stay in a place like this. The weather here was very warm in contrast to the cool air of Ireland. So, for a chance I get to turn on the air-conditioning. I got a massive room with a huge wall mounted television set. The Westminster Hotel can be considered a business hotel as most people who come here stay here for some business nearby. The Westminster Hotel also has a few nice facilities, a swimming pool and a small gym for visitors to keep fit. Unfortunately, public transport is not very convenient as it is too infrequent. Walking is not very convenient either as sidewalks are almost nonexistent. I didn’t have a license to drive here so I need to rely on my companions or just walk. My stay at the hotel was mostly pleasant except for that one weekend where some drunk guests were making a ruckus outside the rooms.
