The Downhill House at Downhill Demesne was actually nothing but the ruins of the original house which Frederick Hervey built as part of his country home. There wasn’t really that much to see here so we merely made our way to the carpark, basically retracing our steps. It turns out that our ticket was supposed to cover two sites one of which we just visited which is the Downhill Demesne. The second one is a place called Hezlett House. We weren’t really sure where this place was exactly. We just continued to drive down the same road until we saw some signs which pointed to a certain Hezlett House.
The Hezlett House is a charming and well maintained traditional Irish thatched house. I think I have seen quite a few of them going around Ireland but this would be the first one I would actually get to explore up close. I always thought that these huts were very attractive and I always wondered what they looked like inside. It looks like there are staff manning the house and there was one greeting us as we entered the house. They already know that we came from Downhill Demesne and didn’t even bother looking at our tickets. This will be a good opportunity to see this house at the same time understand how it works since there will be a guided tour.
