The last major structure which we will be visiting here at Downhill Demesne is the Downhill House. As the name implies, this is where the actually country home was built be Frederick Hervey. For a country home, this was certainly a very large house. The facade of the house looks modern enough. The windows as well as the roof are long gone. While I could imagine why the roof would rot away, the windows are a mystery to me. Even the windows frames are gone and it is unlikely they were made of non durable material. Anyway, this two century old house now has a look of an ancient Greek ruin at least to me.
Frederick Hervey was known to be flamboyant person. As he was earl and bishop at the same time, it seems that he makes the rounds in high society. Not really uncommon these days that rich people would have large estates, this was also the case back then. From the front, the house didn’t seem particularly large but it is a different story when from from the side. You can see how long it actually is. There is an unmanned gate to enter the house itself. Just help yourself in the house.
