There were a lot of interesting things to see here at Tory Island but not all of them may catch your attention. Just walking down the main street of the village and you might be able to pass by some historic sites. Not all of them are as prominent as the bell tower. We passed by a stone structure but we weren’t really sure what it was. There was a sign nearby but it seemed to be pointing to different directions. It was only after I got back to my computer that I found out what it was. It was a grave.
This is the Grave of the Seven. It is so named because there was a boat or curragh which washed ashore with the bodies of a woman and six men. There bodies were buried this this grave. I had no idea it was grave and I was thinking that it was the remnants of an old church and this was where the altar was. I would admit that thinking that it was a church was a bit of a stretch since the place was so tiny but I never thought that it was a grave. Perhaps if they put a cross then it would be more obvious. The grave here is a shallow rectangular pit which is surrounded by walls of stone. I wasn’t sure about the pit but I’m guessing that is where the actually bodies actually are. There is no fence stopping people from going in the pit but it doesn’t seem people are interested in it anyway.
