It is amazing how we managed to get out of the village of Tory by just passing a few houses. It isn’t a large village at all and I can only imagine how quiet it is here at night. There is a pub here but that is probably it. The only shopping area here is a souvenir shop which probably has a few groceries. Life is probably hard and boring here. But you get to live off an amazing land which we are about to explore. The road leads us in a generally southeastern direction. There were a few cars which pass us by but for the most part it is a quiet walk. In bad weather, there won’t be any shelter here but I suppose not a lot of people would be out that time. The landscape here is quite stark. There weren’t trees here which I noticed in other places which we had been to. The winds are too strong that trees will not be able to grow very tall here. The most common plant life you can see here is grass, probably the only thing tall enough to grow here.
A look at the landscape here in Tory will make you wonder why would anyone want to live here. The Irish mainland is not that far away and it is not even that heavily populated. Perhaps people really wanted to get away from it all. Unsurprisingly, a monastery was founded here by Saint Colmcille back in the 6th century. Seeing as to how isolated this place is, it seemed to be the perfect place to set up a monastery. The road we were taking was not really very interesting and we got a feeling that we were missing a lot, so we decided to head north towards the shore where hopefully there would be better things to see.
