The whole point of coming to Magheroarty was to take the ferry to Tory Island. Tory Island is a rather remote island in the north of Donegal. Magheroarty is one of the main ports where visitors can take ferries to the island. The other port would be Bunbeg. It think it has been a while since I last took a ferry to another island. Seine River cruise doesn’t count. Our ferry ride would be taking us from the solid land to open sea – the Atlantic Ocean. We boarded the ferry which wasn’t really that big. There were seats inside and but I was thinking of taking photos of the sea as we were leaving port so we stayed outside.
One thing is for sure, the sea was already rough even if it was a beautiful day. It felt like we were climbing a mountain as the waves kept getting bigger. Before we crested on a wave there was another one which would bring us higher. It was a strange feeling since I have rode on boats before and this was the first time I felt like that on a boat ride. Sure it was rough but I have rode on rough seas before. This sure was different. The ride was so rough that I can’t really stand around and take photos anymore. Water was splashing all around the place that I needed to shield my camera in my jacket. This while trying to hold on to the seat which basically was my only link to the boat. Other spots in the boat were much drier. In hindsight, I would still have preferred to sit outside since I would get to experience how it is to sail on the Atlantic.
