We arrvied at Magheroarty Port with plenty of time to spare. You don’t have a lot of option which taking the ferry here since it only leaves the port two times a day. The earliest one can hope for is the 11:30am trip. For visitors, it really does seem to be quite late since that only leaves you with only a few hours on the island, if you don’t plan to stay over. There are a bit more options when leaving the island but they aren’t really very good schedules. The latest would be 6pm in the summer and 4pm in winter. This is probably to make use of the available light before it gets totally dark. The ferry ride, though short, navigates some rather rough waters and it would be best to see where the oncoming waves are.
We were already worrying if we would be able to explore much of Tory Island but we were told that the ferry is going to be an hour late. The only leaves us with even less hours of exploring. While waiting for the ferry to arrive, we just went to take a look a the port. This was a small fishing port and there isn’t a lot of activity around. The pier sticks out to the beautiful blue sea. There were a few boats here but not the one I needed. There wasn’t much beach in the immediate port area but there was one further on. It was quite rocky here and it makes walking difficult. I think the rocks were put here to serve as breakwaters to prevent erosion. Even if the port was small, it is still interesting to see one up close.
