Strandhill is a very small town which is along the beach near Knocknarea. The place was so rough because of the constant winds that I didn’t think people would want to live here. I suppose the winds aren’t really there all the time but it can be quite a nuisance. Keeping warm in this kind of weather is probably not easy with these winds. Anyway, we had a bit of time to use before we leave. Like most towns in Ireland, Strandhill also has a small square of plaza. There isn’t really much to see here. There is a statue which looks more like an abstract piece of art.
More interesting here is probably the presence of a cannon which is pointed towards the sea. It seems that the cannon wasn’t really originally from Strandhill. With the dismantling of a military installation at nearby Rosses Point, someone purchased one of the cannons and displayed it here pointing it at the sea. This was supposedly a bid to drum up interest in the town. I don’t know if the cannon had any effect but it seems that Strandhill is quite a popular place to be in. If you are into surfing, then Strandhill might be the place to be.
