I have been to a few heads here in Ireland and county Donegal seems to have quite a few spectacular ones. A head is something like a piece of land which juts out to the sea. In Ireland, there usually take the form of spectacular cliffs which fall precipitously into the sea. Well, not all of the heads here are very high. Fanad Head here is one of the more ordinary ones. However, it seems that it was important enough to add it as a destination in the Wild Altantic Way, a tourist route which promotes the western coast of the Ireland, of which Fanad Head is one of the first stops, assuming you start in county Donegal.
We weren’t exactly sure how to proceed here. There seems to be a fence which prevents entry into the lighthouse grounds, but there didn’t seem to be any guards here to keep people or trespassers away. We decided to wait until other people go in the lighthouse grounds before proceeding. In the meantime, we first explored the area around the lighthouse. Same as other heads found throughout Ireland, the area near is it is pasture. We had to squeeze through the barbed wire fence to get to the spot. It may take a little bit of struggling since the opening in the fence isn’t really very big. If you are large, you might have some difficulty to enter through this fence.
