We climbed the Shepherd’s Path which is a relatively steep flight of stairs going up to the top of the cliffs which front the sea. I wasn’t expecting to be able to walk that far at the Giant’s Causeway. I was under the impression that it was all just rocks. This hike was a pleasant surprise to an already very interesting visit. From the top of the cliffs here you can see the rest of the area. I honestly didn’t know it was that high but it seems to be higher than it appeared. From here you can choose to continue the trail going further and hoping to be able to see the closed off portion of the Giant’s Causeway.
We chose the other way. Actually, we weren’t sure where the path would lead us to. We were hoping that it will bring us back to the visitor’s center. There was a nice opening where you can get a good view of the area as well, but this one didn’t have fences, visitors need to be careful here that they don’t slip all the way down. This high up, the basalt columns the Giant’s Causeway is famous for is no longer visible as it just blends in together with the rest of the exposed rock. From there it was just a slow walk back to the visitor’s center. Seems not a lot of people were using this trail as most people opted to go back the way they came. This was a pity since this can be considered one of the highlights in visiting the Giant’s Causeway.
