Rugged Coast of the Giant’s Causeway

I always thought that the Giant’s Causeway was only the part where there were amazing hexagonal rock formations. Turns out that that was just part of a larger area which comprised the Giant’s Causeway UNESCO World Heritage site. Much of the site is hugging the coast and it is certainly deserving of that. The coast here is one of the more impressive coasts you can see here in Ireland. I do know that a lot of the Giant’s Causeway was formed by volcanism millions of years ago. But there are a lot large parts of the site which is shaped by the sea.

Being so close to the Atlantic Ocean, Ireland’s coasts are shaped by the powerful waves from the ocean. The waters near the Giant’s Causeway are likewise constantly buffeted by waves, leaving some interestingly shaped rocks. We had to cross a rocky field to get to the next area and there were some interestingly shaped rocks here. Including one which looks like and ergonomic sofa. In fact, it was large enough to sit two people. The path to the next area seems to be relatively high but I wasn’t sure where it was supposed to go. A lot of people seem to be going there and we were curious to find out what was there. It was summer so there was still a lot of light left, I think we have time to spare to go around the area.
