Dunluce Castle is a nice little ruined castle on the coast of county Antrim. It was built on top of solid rock with very steep sides making it a perfect spot to built a fortress. Actually, before Dunluce Castle became a castle, there was an old Irish fort here so it was obvious to the builders the benefits of building the castle here. With the sharp drops on all sides of the castle and the rough waters in front of the castle, it is certainly very well defended. This can be best appreciated from far away as visitors will be able to see most of the rock on which the castle was built on.
Dunluce Castle was first built in the 14th century. It frequently changed hands over the centuries until Ireland fell into the hands of the English. Sometime after that, the castle fell into disrepair and it was cannibalized for material for other buildings. Owing to its proximity to the sea, part of the castle collapsed and fell into the sea. I still think it is a bad idea to have built it here and I guess that is just one of the reasons why it was a bad idea.
