Visiting Slieve League in County Donegal is probably one of the signature visits one can make. Sure you can visit a lot of “heads” which are all around the coasts of Ireland, but this has got to be one of the most impressive ones I have seen. The sea cliffs here in Slieve League fall precipitously into the Atlantic Ocean and they are considered to be the highest sea cliffs in Europe. While they are not yet vertigo inducing, the height from the edge of these cliffs is certainly impressive. Exploring Slieve League can be considered straightforward. There is a path from the parking lot to the edge of the cliffs. You probably won’t have to worry too much since there is a fence here but sometimes winds maybe powerful so it still pays to be careful.
The path doesn’t last very long and soon you are forging your path to the top of the cliffs in whatever way is most convenient for you. There would be some paths which are worn and thus more traveled so it is probably safer to follow those. Some parts of the path maybe a little rocky and unstable so it is important that you bring proper walking shoes here. I would probably prefer ones which are high cut to help prevent twisting of ankles. I have been to a few of these walks and I can’t remember how many times I almost twisted my ankle only because I didn’t have proper protection. While a high cut boot may be a bit cumbersome to use, it will help you keep safe.
