One of the things which Italians are pretty proud of is the quality of their coffee. Now, I know a lot of people who are very into their coffee, and it always needs to be done in a particular way. I was never a massive fan of coffee, in fact, I always thought it to be too bitter for my tastes. I won’t be able to distinguish coffee types if my life depended on it. However, I can relate to their passion for their coffee. Coffee shops are very common in Rome and of course Italy, you might be hard pressed to find on which is “the best”. Interestingly, probably owing to the high standard of coffee tastes here in Italy, I have yet to find a Starbucks here.
One particular coffee shop which we passed by here seems to be quite well known. The Sant’Eustachio Il Caffe isn’t really a huge coffee shop but it is in a busy area and there are not surprisingly a lot of people here. The interiors look like their come from the 1920s and I think it is quite attractive. My friends here are coffee lovers and they just had to stop here for a coffee break, they are also aware of the quality of Italian Coffee. I just had to try their coffee despite my dislike for it. Perhaps they can put a lot of cream in it to disguise the bitterness. Anyway, the cup I had didn’t really change my opinion about coffee, but it seems my friends were quite happy with their cuppa. One think that I note was how tiny the cups of coffee were.
One thing to note about Italian coffee shops, is that it matters where you sit. You can have your coffee at the counter and chat away with the other patrons, It is actually not a bad experience. Or you can choose to have a seat outside the coffee shop. However, using the shops seats outside will cost you. It seems a lot of tourists are not aware of this and they needed to be chased out of their seat. It is a bit embarrassing both for the cafe and the customers to be be chasing them out but those are their rules.
