The imposing Castel Sant’Angelo was built to house the ashes of the Roman Emperor Hadrian. It looks a lot like a castle and perhaps that was done intentionally. Eventually, the popes came to reside here and turned it into their own castle and fortress. It is probably not surprising since Saint Peter’s Basilica is just a short distance away. There wasn’t a terribly long queue to go in the castle but we went in anyway. As what we already saw from the outside. The main layout of the castle is circular. The floors are made of small and smaller cyclinders, much like a wedding cake.
What wasn’t immediately evident from the outside was that it was surprisingly large and spacious. There were halls which lead to the inside the of the castle with roofs which are two stories high. It gives you a sense of size once you pass through these passageways. Most of the exploration of the Castel Sant’Angelo would be go to each floor and see how the different eras have affected this ancient structure. It is hard to believe that this structure is almost two thousand years old. Of course numerous enhancements have been made over the centuries but it is still an impressive feat.
