Saint Peter’s Basilica is every bit as massive and as grand as I expected it to be. The basilica is the largest church in the world. I was surprised to find out that Saint Peter’s Basilica is not the seat of the Catholic church, that honor actually goes to the Archbasilica of Saint John Lateran. It is, however, one of four papal basilicas in the area. Saint Peter’s Basilica is the one papal basilica which is in the Vatican City, the other three are in Rome, still nearby. Saint Peter’s Basilica is the largest of the papal basilicas and it has a massive square in front of it which makes it perfect for major ceremonies like canonizations. Although it is not really the most important basilica, people will still invariably find their way into Saint Peter’s Basilica. I didn’t even know of the other three basilicas until now.
Saint Peter’s Basilica is basically a super-sized baroque church. I have been to a few very large churches and basilicas but this is certainly the largest I have ever been to. This is natural since this is the largest church in the world. It can be very daunting to explore this massive structure. It seems that the sides of the church itself can house a few smaller churches. It is really breathtaking. We decided to explore the sides of the church but people just went all over the place, there isn’t really a sequence to follow here. Just see what is interesting and snap away.
