After that very impressive viewing of the dome of the Saint Peter’s Basilica, I thought that was the end of the tour of the dome. However, I was mistaken. From the looks of it we were just at the cylinder of the dome. I didn’t even think it was possible to go further up that we already were. There was another flight of stairs which continue upward. I’m very impressed with how they managed to build the stairs without it being obvious from the outside. From here the stairs become very narrow that the can only fit one person’s width at a time. If you are claustrophobic, you might want to turn back here. The narrow passage goes on for a bit but always continuing up.
Somehow the walls were strangely tilted. I was thinking that somehow there must have been a mistake in the construction of the stairs. That was when I realized that the top of the dome was also tilted. We were making our way to the very top of the dome. The stairs was going around the dome and following the shape of the dome, thus the tilted walls. It may be a bit disorienting but it was quite fun. From there a spiral staircase which is good enough for two people with a thick rope for visitors to hold on to. This is probably it, the top of the dome itself.
