I was quite surprised to know that it is possible to climb up the dome of Saint Peter’s Basilica. While, I have always dreamed of visiting this magnificent basilica, it was only now that I got at chance to do so. There are two ways of going up the dome, the first and arguably the easiest way is to go up using the lifts. The lifts are to the right of the basilica building, you can’t miss it as there is a sign for it. The second way, and the cheapest way, is to walk up. There is a sign which says how many steps it was to climb up the dome. I think it would be a pity if you just paid your way up the dome. I guess I just wanted to be able to properly explore the basilica.
As you might expect, there is a long flight of stairs going up the dome. The steps are actually not very high, which is good as there will be elderly people climbing up these stairs. What it does do is it goes round and round the inside of the dome. It is a long way up so it does get a bit dizzying to keep walking up in circles. You do get a break, this is where the roof of the basilica building is. From the outside this is the rectangular building which is the main building of the basilica. From here you can see much of the dome up close. There is another door to enter the dome. No doubt it was another long flight of stairs.
